Lasius minutus is found in the wild living underground in marshy/wet areas. Populations are rare and queens are even rarer. Queens are very small and dark, but workers are average sized for Lasius and orange. Only experienced keepers should buy solo queens with intentions of introducing them to host workers. Temporary Social Parasite.
This species tends to enjoy sugars more than most, but will also take some proteins such as crickets and fruit flies.
This species does not need heating, but will likely benefit from it in brood development. Provide a heat gradient in the nest if you choose to heat them. These ants are from very wet areas, so high humidity may be ideal.
This species requires a diapause period. This period should last 3-4 months ideally. During this time, the ants need to be cooled down to a low temperature. Around 40 degrees fahrenheit is best. You can achieve diapause by placing the ants in a controlled cooling unit, such as a wine cooler, mini fridge, or regular fridge if temperatures are safe. If you cannot use any of these, a non-heated room which stays above freezing could work.
Lasius minutus brood development can take anywhere between 8-10 weeks, usually around 8-9 weeks. Colony size depends on how many host workers were given initially, so some colonies can be in the hundreds within the first or second year.
Queen size: 4-5mm
