Species Info
General: Lasius americanus is a very easy species to keep. They aren't picky with feeding, they take sugars and proteins, especially fruit flies and sugarwater.
Temperature: Lasius americanus benefits from a heat source but does not require one. They prefer to heat their pupae. (79-82)
Diapause: This species requires a diapause period. This period should last 3-4 months ideally. During this time, the ants need to be cooled down to a low temperature. Around 40 degrees fahrenheit is best. You can achieve diapause by placing the ants in a controlled cooling unit, such as a wine cooler, mini fridge, or regular fridge if temperatures are safe. If you cannot use any of these, a non-heated room which stays above freezing could work.
Growth: Brood development takes anywhere from 4-8 weeks, usually about 6-7. Colonies can reach the dozens first year and hundreds second year, growing very quickly above 1000 after that given they are fed enough.
Queen size: 5-7mm
Worker size: 2.5-4mm
