Species Info
General: Dorymyrmex grandulus is a generalist silver species from the eastern US. They grow quickly, love heat, and are erratic.
Diet: These ants have a generalist diet. They need lots of liquid sugars as they are high energy ants, and if they go without it for more than a few days, their colony may collapse. They enjoy a variety of proteins, such as fruit flies, mealworms and crickets.
Temperature: These ants need heat to develop. It is recommended that they are kept at around 84-88, but provide a heating gradient with cooler areas.
Diapause: Dorymyrmex grandulus might need a diapause period. If they appear to slow down, lower them to a colder temperature for 1-2 months (make sure they still have sugar). If they are continuing to grow, then simply keep them out of diapause year round.
Growth: Brood development takes about 5-6 weeks, faster when heated and fed properly. Colonies can reach the 100s of workers in the first year.
Queen size: 6-7mm
Worker size: 2.5-4mm
