Ewart's Honeypot Ants (Myrmecocystus ewarti)

Myrmecocystus ewarti is a small, very cute honeypot hailing from the canyons and streams of the southwestern United States. Queens are an orangish-brown color, while the smaller workers are typically bright yellow. Colonies get repletes (honeypots) which are workers with a large, orb-like gaster filled with food, meant to help the colony withstand times of hardship!

  • Species Info

General: Myrmecocystus ewarti is a yellowish, small species of honeypot. The workers enjoy sweets and small pieces of protein, and prefer to be kept warm.

Diet: This species has a standard honeypot diet. The workers love (and need regularly) sugars in the form of liquid, like Sunburst or sugarwater. As for protein, the best commercial feeder for them is probably fruit flies. Some roaches and crickets would be great for fats too. Mealworms can work, but are probably the least favorite. Make sure to feed protein regularly for the larvae to grow.

Temperature: These ants require heating. A temperature of 79-84 is best, but be sure to provide a heating gradient that includes a cooler area so the ants can regulate themselves. Keep at 81ish during founding especially.

Diapause: These ants may diapause in the winter, but it is somewhat optional. If you keep them warm throughout the winter months, they may still continue growing. If they seem to slow down, lower them to room temperature or a little below. Continue to provide sugars during diapause.

Growth: Brood development is standard for honeypots, at around 7-9 weeks from egg to worker. Colonies can reach the hundreds within the first year, and likely 1000+ after that with sufficient feeding and heat!
