About Ants in Texas
Texas has one of the richest ant faunas in the country! Below, we'll explain what a beginner should get and why it's divided state-by-state.
Why some species can't be sent to Texas
Live ant shipments across state lines are regulated by USDA APHIS, and permits are issued species-by-species and state-by-state. Every species listed above is one that the USDA permits to ship to Texas.
Best beginner species for Texas keepers
Tetramorium immigrans: hardy, fast, active, and forgiving of mistakes. If this is your first colony, start here. Only downside is small size.
Pogonomyrmex (Harvester Ants): large, bold, and endlessly watchable as they haul seeds. If you're looking for larger more active ants, this is your colony.
Camponotus castaneus: Large, shiny orange carpenter ants that achieve major workers as the colonies grow. Slower growing, but beautiful, manageable colonies.
Getting your colony there safely
We ship Monday through Wednesday so nothing sits in a facility over a weekend. In Texas summers, heat is the real risk. During extreme heat waves we might hold shipments rather than gamble on a colony cooking in a delivery van. Live arrival is guaranteed. If you have an issue with your shipment, reach out to us ASAP!
