Tetramorium immigrans: abundant statewide and about as forgiving as a first colony gets.
Pogonomyrmex occidentalis (Harvester Ants): larger, bolder, orange Harvester species that never disappoints. These ants NEED heat to grow. Not native to OH, but deregulated across the US.
Lasius neoniger: common in open areas like baseball fields or lawns/prairies. Easy-going, calm ants.
Camponotus pennsylvanicus: the big black carpenter ant of Ohio forests and old buildings. Loves nesting in wood.

Ants you'll notice around Ohio
Pavement ants own the sidewalks in Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati alike, they're small, dark, and everywhere. Lawns hold Lasius neoniger, which announce themselves with late-summer swarms and make those noticeable turrets of soil (which could be a defense strategy against parasites). In the woods, huge black carpenter ants live in standing and fallen deadwood. If you're lucky, you might even come across some rarer Formica species, relicts from the prairie days.
