About Ants in Wisconsin
Stateside Ants is based in Wisconsin, so this is home ground. The state holds a variety of habitat, from the oak savannas/forests and prairie remnants of the south to the hardwoods and pine stands further north. With this variety of habitat comes a variety of ant species! Formica mounds in old fields, Lasius under forest rocks and logs, Camponotus in standing deadwood, and of course, Tetramorium immigrans swarming the sidewalk. Here's what you can legally keep and what's worth starting with.
Why some species can't be sent to Wiscosin
Live ant shipments across state lines are regulated by USDA APHIS, and permits are issued species-by-species and state-by-state. Every species listed above is one that the USDA permits to ship to Wisconsin. Since we're in Wisconsin, we only sell ants native to WI in-state.
Best beginner species for Wisconsin keepers
Tetramorium immigrans: hardy, fast, active, and forgiving. Found in every Wisconsin parking lot and sidewalk crack. If this is your first colony, start here.
Pogonomyrmex occidentalis (Harvester Ants): larger, bolder, and endlessly watchable as they haul seeds. If you're looking for larger more active ants, this is your colony. These ants love heat.
Camponotus castaneus: Large, shiny orange carpenter ants that achieve major workers as the colonies grow. Slower growing, but beautiful, manageable colonies.
Ants you'll notice around Wisconsin:
If you live here, you've already met most of them. The small dark ants in every sidewalk crack are pavement ants (Tetramorium immigrans). The little golden-brown ones that suddenly swarm over lawns and ball diamonds around Labor Day are Lasius neoniger, the Labor Day Ant. The big black ones scaling your woodpile or porch are probably carpenter ants (Camponotus). And those grassy mounds out in fields are usually Formica, which will swarm out angrily if you disturb one!
